Owner & Principal

Katie Walker | NCIDQ

Katie founded Slate Studios after a decade of Interior Design, Project Management, Procurement, and Sales experience in the Hospitality Industry. She has worked with top Hotel Brands and has a portfolio of over one hundred new construction and renovation hotel projects across the country.

Like so many people, 2020 brought big changes to her life and one thing continued to stand out in her mind, remembering why she entered the field of Interior Design in the first place. Hospitality Design started to drift away from her design values, and she decided to launch Slate Studios with a focus on residential.

Katie is a Florida native but obtained her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After establishing a northeastern work ethic, and a new appreciation for the warm weather, she moved back to her home state and is now a Florida Licensed Interior Designer. She is also an NCIDQ certified professional, holding certificate number 33483. NCIDQ Certification is the industry's recognized indicator of proficiency in interior design principles and a designer's commitment to the profession. Even with her industry experience, she is still always learning and continues to stay on top of the latest materials, products, and trends by staying active in the design community.

Katie’s eye for design is balanced by her background in Project Management, Procurement, and Business Operations. The key to any successful design project is great communication, operating with integrity, problem-solving, and orchestrating the many moving parts of each project.

Her passion for interior design started at a young age. Her father was a contractor who built her childhood home, and she grew up doing projects with him. From painting walls, and installing cabinets to rearranging furniture, she got the creative gene from him. As a middle-schooler, she also watched her grandmother become a wheelchair user. By witnessing first-hand the design challenges that presented themselves to her grandmother because the space was not suited for someone in a wheelchair, she became extremely passionate about learning building codes and accessibility requirements to design spaces for everyone.

To Katie, interior design is not just a career, it is her passion. She knows how a well-designed space can have a profound impact on people's lives and well-being. Design brings people together, makes spaces functional, enjoyable, and nurturing. Katie loves to be able to share her passion, knowledge, and expertise to help her clients.

What is the meaning behind the name 'slate'?

slate [ sleyt ]
noun

When clay, shale, and quartz undergo metamorphism, it produces slate. Metamorphic rocks are hard to come by. They have to undergo immense pressures and temperatures to be transformed.

At Slate Studios, the interiors we design undergo their own metamorphosis. It takes an immense amount of passion, knowledge, and devotion to transform a space and we take pride in being able to provide the metamorphosis to our clients.

Your home should be unique to you. If your home doesn't match your lifestyle, support your passions, and nourish your soul, then it's time for a change.
