Great Room Refresh for Modern Life

Kitchen & Great Room

project

project Type:  Renovation

location:  Odessa, FL

project scope:  full service interior design

vendors:  Garth & Ally, Studio Morr

collaborators: Quality Restoration & Renovation, Gerardo Luna Photography

For this great room, our goal was to merge the home’s timeless architecture with a fresh modern update. What once felt like a formal space with ornate traditional details, it felt disconnected from the client’s modern laid-back lifestyle. Through thoughtful updates, including bespoke elements and a focus on cohesive design, we transformed the space into a warm and inviting space casual enough to relax and unwind, but beautiful enough for entertaining.

Transitional meets contemporary. The stately interior of the Jones residence is beautiful, but it doesn't quite reflect the client's style. With architectural details, intricate millwork, stunning views of the outdoors, and the custom kitchen cabinets, the home has gorgeous features. However, these features combined with ornate and heavy light fixtures, faux plaster wall finishes, and an undefined style are making the space field dated. In order to get these items to coexist together, we will play with juxtaposition.

The living room ceiling now boasts a striking architectural detail that adds depth and dimension. This update enhances the room’s character and blends the home’s traditional craftsmanship with the updated contemporary style.

Jones Family

The Jones Family returned to us (we love repeat clients!) to reimagine their great room and kitchen into a space that reflected their lifestyle. They had a number of obstacles with the space, first how to incorporate a dining table in the kitchen that didn’t feel crammed and out of place, second, how to blend the kitchen and living room so they felt connected and not disjointed, and third, how to blend the ornate architecture, heavy trim work, ornate built ins, and traditional kitchen cabinetry to feel modern and fresh. At Slate Studios, we love a good challenge.

We lightened up the wall finishes which now allows existing millwork to shine. Adding contrasting paint to ceiling crown molding brings your eye up to focus on beautiful ceiling details and light fixtures.

A custom, hand-patinaed brass hood designed by a local artisan now serves as the new focal point of the kitchen. The hood’s sleek banding and warm metallic finish bring a bespoke, luxurious touch to the space, balancing the traditional cabinetry with modern artistry.

The newly designed kitchen island bridges the gap between function and form, doubling as an island with a banquette and dining table to better connect the kitchen to the great room. This multi-functional piece seamlessly matches the existing cabinetry while redefining the flow of the space, turning what once felt disjointed into a harmonious living area.

the direction

By layering traditional architectural features with modern updates, we’ve created a design that feels fresh and timeless. Thoughtful details, such as the custom hood, ceiling feature, and textured stone wall, tie the space together. While color, pattern, and texture used in the furnishings incorporates the clients cool and laid back style.

Transitional meets

contemporary

We carefully balanced modern elements with the home’s ornate details, opting for clean-lined
furniture, subtle textures, and contemporary accents to soften the formality. Warm tones and
classic details ensured the space felt cohesive and grounded. The result? A home that feels approachable yet refined, perfect for both unwinding after a long day and entertaining.
