Golden Horizon is a conceptual design study inspired by an actual waterfront residence located on Davis Islands in Tampa, Florida. While the floor plan and architecture were based on the new construction project, we reimagined the design through a new narrative centered on resilience. The design is largely inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi, which is the art of embracing imperfections and finding beauty through repair. Following the devastation of Hurricane Milton, the home explores how design can transform adversity into something meaningful, celebrating new beginnings while honoring experiences that shape us.

The primary suite was inspired by a simple sketch on a napkin and a desire to create a resort-style retreat where the bedroom and bathroom feel seamlessly connected. To achieve this vision, smart glass was incorporated as the divider between the two spaces, allowing natural light to flow throughout the suite while providing privacy on demand. A private courtyard draws daylight deep into the home and strengthens the connection to nature, while the freestanding tub, spa-inspired shower, and sauna were strategically positioned to create a sense of openness, luxury, and wellness. Every space-planning decision was made to maximize light, enhance flow, and transform everyday routines into a restorative experience.

The Couple
We imagined the homeowners as a successful professional couple who value health, wellness, and meaningful experiences. Passionate about entertaining, they envisioned a waterfront home that would effortlessly accommodate gatherings while also serving as a restorative retreat from their busy lives. Inspired by extensive travels throughout Japan, they were drawn to the principles of simplicity, balance, and connection to nature. The result is a home that blends contemporary coastal living with subtle Japanese influences, creating a sanctuary designed for both connection and reflection.

Designed as an extension of the primary suite, the bathroom embraces the feeling of bathing in nature. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing in the shower floods the space with natural light while framing views of the private courtyard and water beyond, creating an experience reminiscent of an open-air resort shower. The material palette remains intentionally restrained, allowing texture, light, and the connection to the outdoors to take center stage. Every element was considered to transform daily routines into a calming ritual rooted in wellness, serenity, and a seamless relationship with nature.

Rather than pursuing minimalism for its own sake, the design embraces intentional restraint. We crafted meaningful design moments into the interiors to ensure the home feels soulful and lived-in rather than stark or overly minimal. Each space strikes a balance between serenity and character, allowing the architecture to breathe while still reflecting the people who call it home. Subtle references to Kintsugi are woven throughout the design, not as a literal motif, but as a guiding philosophy. Metallic accents, layered textures, and imperfect natural materials celebrate the beauty found in transformation and remind us that the most meaningful spaces are those that tell a story. From the spa-inspired primary suite to the cloud-inspired sky lounge, every room was designed to foster restoration, reflection, and a deeper connection to nature.

The living room design is anchored by a custom fireplace feature and layered with organic forms, the space feels both sophisticated and inviting, the perfect place to gather, unwind, and connect. A thoughtful lighting strategy was essential to creating the home's atmosphere. Recessed ceiling pockets with concealed cove lighting provide a soft, ambient glow that highlights architectural features and natural materials without feeling harsh or overly formal

The kitchen was designed around a deliberate sense of balance through asymmetry. With the sculptural staircase serving as a strong architectural focal point, the cabinetry composition was thoughtfully offset to create visual harmony rather than perfect symmetry. To reinforce the clean, contemporary aesthetic, the upper cabinetry was clad in the same natural stone as the hood surround, creating a seamless architectural volume that visually lightens the composition while highlighting the beauty of the material.
