This compact urban condo renovation represents a carefully executed transformation. Nearly two years in development, the homeowner and general contractor enlisted Slate Studios to reestablish a unified design vision. We resolved layout challenges, redirected material selections, and aligned every finish to create a seamless, contemporary interior. Each detail was considered holistically, ensuring continuity from millwork and lighting to furnishings and spatial flow. In the clients own words “The best thing we EVER did was to hire your company.”
overview

after
before
When the homeowners first began their renovation, they had a contractor and cabinetry team in place, but quickly found themselves overwhelmed and stuck. Without a designer to lead the process, decisions were stalled, the cabinetry team lacked direction, and the contractor was left chasing an ever-changing vision. There was no clear plan, no cohesive style, and no way to confidently move forward. Once Slate Studios stepped in, everything shifted. We brought a holistic vision, detailed design plans, and clarity to the process, aligning all vendors, making confident decisions, and turning a scattered renovation into a seamless, elevated design.
backstory
living room

detail
A bespoke bar in the living room serves as both a focal point and a functional feature, bringing personality and warmth to the space. The antiqued mirror backsplash reflects light beautifully, and literally SPARKLES in the evening. Ceiling-mounted brass shelving adds a touch of elegance. Custom lacquered fluted cabinetry in a serene blue color with built-in wine fridge complete the look.

The Couple
The couple purchased their Hyde Park condominium in 2006 with the long-term vision of making it their primary residence upon retirement. Having spent much of their time living abroad, their global perspective and appreciation for art, culture, and hospitality deeply informed the design direction. We worked through every detail to balance practicality within a compact footprint while maintaining a sense of sophistication and ease. Every square inch of the 869-square-foot residence was carefully considered, ensuring thoughtful storage solutions, intentional scale, and seamless flow throughout.

When working with a neutral palette, texture becomes the key to visual interest. We layered sculptural fluted travertine tiles on the fireplace, a wrapped rope console table, and rattan lounge chair frames to create depth without overwhelming the space. Embroidered fabric on the window treatments and mesh insert panels on the cabinetry further enhance the tactile experience.

the direction
The design direction focused on creating a space that reflects the couple's love of travel and past experiences, while offering a foundation for the years ahead. Custom cabinetry was thoughtfully integrated to enhance functionality without cluttering the space with freestanding furnishings. This allowed the small footprint to still feel open, organized, and intentional. The neutral color palette, complemented by strategic color accents create a calming atmosphere aligning with the clients love for art and relaxation. No detail was an afterthought, every element from trim details on upholstery and window treatments, to the touch and feel of the hardware, and style of the doors and AC registers, was thoughtfully selected to enhance the space.

Nuanced neutrals inspired Condo
project
Nuanced neutrals inspired the design. We wanted to create a palette of bright and welcoming neutrals, resort-inspired furnishings, sculptural shapes, and unexpected textures. Strategic pops of color were incorporated to provide visual interest without overwhelming the senses. A large source of inspiration for us was to feature the couples cherished art collection. The artwork was an opportunity to tell the clients story throughout the design, adding personal significance and character.

DINING & KITCHEN

detail
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and in this petite space, our goal was to make it feel both expansive and welcoming. A built-in dining bench provides additional seating and storage without cluttering the layout. Board and batten detailing adds character, while wrapping cabinetry panels around both the kitchen and dining areas creates a seamless flow, visually tricking the eye into perceiving a larger space.

master bedroom

detail
To infuse the master bedroom with warmth and texture, we enveloped the walls, and even the wardrobe doors, in wallpaper, creating a cozy yet refined retreat. Built-in cabinetry maximizes storage without overwhelming the room, while a custom upholstered headboard frames the artwork and nightstands, subtly drawing the eye outward to make the space feel more expansive.
contrast & balance
In a compact residence, balance becomes everything. We were intentional about creating balance and keeping visual interest with contrast, pairing clean contemporary lines with subtle moments of softness, sculptural lighting, tailored textiles, and curated artwork. These elements work together creating contrast without visual noise. The result is a space that feels composed yet welcoming, refined yet entirely livable.

A Global
perspective
Entertaining and hospitality hold special meaning for the homeowners. Living in a country where certain freedoms and rituals look different, the opportunity to design a dedicated bar and wine refrigerator felt particularly significant. Rather than an afterthought, this feature became an intentional focal point — a symbol of gathering, celebration, and the lifestyle they look forward to embracing more fully in Hyde Park.

Concept Development
Each project begins with a refined design presentation that establishes the architectural direction, material palette, and furnishings in full. Through renderings, drawings, and curated selections, we translate vision into a cohesive plan - ensuring every detail is considered before installation begins.
in conclusion
The transformation of the Hyde Pak contemporary Condo is a testament to the power of intentional design. What began as a fragmented space is now a cohesive, carefully composed residence that mirrors the homeowners’ global perspective and refined lifestyle. Through a meticulous approach, and disciplined attention to scale, proportion, and detail, every square inch of the 869-square-foot footprint was optimized without sacrificing sophistication. The result is a refined yet inviting retreat where they can relax, entertain, and enjoy the years ahead.
