High vs Low: Transforming the Same Office Space at Two Different Price Points

high vs low design slate studios interior design

When embarking on an interior design project, one of the main questions we are asked relates to how much should be budgeted for the furnishings, finishes, and fixtures. There is not a black and white answer to this question as there are many variables to consider such as the size of the space, the elements needed to complete the space, if existing furnishings are to be used, and weather to invest in forever/heirloom quality pieces or go with more budget friendly pieces that may need to be replaced down the road.

At Slate Studios, we understand the profound impact that design decisions can have on both aesthetics and finances. We also take pride in helping our customers understand how much to invest in their project depending on what they are looking to accomplish.

We recently had the pleasure of transforming an office space in two distinct ways, showcasing how far you can stretch the budget with high price point items compared to low price point items. Both offices are beautiful, but it is up to the client and the desired end result to determine how much the project will cost.

Wish List Items & Design Parameters

Opting for either the low or high variation of the design did not change the overarching design goals and clients wish list. For each design, we started with the following parameters:

  • Window Treatments Must be Provided

  • Lighting to be Improved

  • Storage Needed for Office Supplies

  • Printer to be Hidden

  • Desk with Two Guest Chairs

The design also had the following wish list items:

  • Television to be directly in front of Desk

  • Nice Backdrop for Video Conferencing

  • Built-In Cabinetry

  • Room to Feature Client's Personality

  • Make Space more desirable to spend time in

Office Design at a Lower Price Point: A Stellar Space with a Strategic Approach

For this office design, we stretched the investment as far as we could while still fulfilling the client's essential needs. In doing so, the client did have to forgo some of their wish list items, but we still created a space that is stylish, functional, and reflective of their personality.

Total Price of Furnishings: $11,875*

*not including sales tax, shipping, warehousing/delivery fees, installation, or accessories

This design board showcases how careful selection of materials, furniture, and decor allowed us to create a high-end feel without the high-end price tag. By choosing ready-made furniture, semi-custom cabinetry, and limiting the work that subcontractors and trades would need to complete, we kept the costs down while maintaining a cohesive and inviting environment.

Some Major Differences between this and the Higher Price Point Are:

  • No repainting of the walls or ceilings

  • Not adding any electrical work, keeping TV in existing location on side wall of desk

  • Faux Leather Desk Chair

  • Art Prints

  • Woven Roller Shades in a Value Fabric

The result is a space that meets the client’s needs and aesthetic preferences, proving that style doesn’t always have to come at a premium.

Office Design at a Higher Price Point: Investing in Luxurious Details

In contrast, our high-end variation allowed us to indulge in luxurious details and custom solutions that elevate the space to a new level of sophistication. Here, we were able to fully realize the client's vision with custom-built cabinetry, premium materials like marble countertops and leather seating, and integrated smart technology for lighting and climate control.

Total Price of Furnishings: $33,925*

*not including sales tax, shipping, warehousing/delivery fees, installation, or accessories

This design board highlights the luxurious elements that set this office apart. The investment in bespoke furniture and high-end finishes not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also adds lasting value to the space.

Some Major Differences between this and the Lower Price Point Are:

  • Limewash Ceiling Feature

  • Luxurious Wallpaper on all walls

  • Electrical work, relocating TV, adding wall sconces and recessed ceiling lights

  • Luxe Heirloom Quality Desk

  • Real Leather Desk Chair

  • Commissioned Art Piece

  • Larger L-Shaped Cabinetry Built-in featuring Mesh Cabinetry Inserts

The result is a sophisticated and highly functional office that exudes professionalism and refinement, perfectly aligned with the client’s goals.
