Week 7: The Office Comes to Life

One Room Challenge | The Office Comes to Life | Slate Studios Interior Design

We've reached Week 7 of the One Room Challenge, and the excitement is palpable. With the finish line in sight, our focus this week is on the vital finishing touches that will bring our office project to life. From wallpaper to cabinetry and countertops, we're checking off some major milestones!

If you haven't all ready, be sure to check out my previous blog posts and follow along with me on this 8 week challenge where I transform one room!

The Art of Wallpaper Installation in an Office

The transformative power of wallpaper is undeniable, and this week, we're witnessing its magic! With so many options to choose from, I was able to narrow it down immediately knowing I wanted something bold, moody, and organic such as grasscloth. The beauty of grass cloth is that the patterns never line up perfectly, you either love it or can't stand it, and me, well I'm in love.

The installer started by prepping the walls, he sanded them down and skimmed the drywall so we have a flat finish for the wallpaper to adhere too. Skipping this step will result in wallpaper that shows all of the imperfections in the wall.

This room proved to be complicated because of the angles and arched window. The installed had to meticulously cut around the windows and create a special piece to fill in the archway. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out!

Crafting Functional Storage

Once the wallpaper was installed, it was time to install the base cabinets! My carpenter meticulously installed the cabinets, toe kicks, and filler panels to fill in the gaps between the cabinets and the walls. Since the middle cabinet is designed to hold my printer, my carpenter also prepared the cut out inside the cabinetry for the electrical outlet for me.

Cabinetry holds a special place in my heart as a designer, particularly because I love having a place for everything and everything in it's place. It's a moment of both functionality and beauty coming together with the deep black stained oak and the final details of brass gold hardware and mesh inserts will take it over the top.

At this point, the cabinetry installation is done until the countertops are installed. The upper cabinets sit on top of the countertops, so we moved onto templating.

Choosing the Crown Jewel:

Countertops play a crucial role in the overall look and functionality of a space. This week, we're making our final selections and ensuring the perfect fit for our design concept. The right countertop can tie the room together and provide the finishing touch that completes the picture.

The countertop supplier first came to my space to template the size of the countertop needed. They also reviewed to confirm the counters will be able to be manuevered into the space, and the angles of walls. We did determine that due to an angled wall, we will have to have a seam but we found the perfect way to position it so that it will barely be noticeable.

Early in the design process, I knew I wanted cosmic black granite. I personally made a trip to handpick the slab because since it's a natural stone, each piece can vary. The striking black stone with its contrasting white and gold elements harmonizes beautifully with the wallpaper and cabinetry, completing the vision I had in mind. I found a winning piece!

The Final Touches:

While we now wait for the countertop installation, I have been working on the final details! I now have the light fixture installed (she's a show stopper), and the artwork is here and ready to be hung.

With just one week remaining in the One Room Challenge, the anticipation is building, and I can't wait to unveil the final result. There is still a lot left to do in one week, and there

These finishing touches are where a design truly comes to life, and I’m eager to showcase the transformation.
