One Room Challenge | Week 6: Trim, Texture & Architectural Details

It’s hard to believe we’ve already made it to Week 6 of the One Room Challenge! The finish line is finally in sight, and I must say, this week was one of the most satisfying yet. After weeks of prep, painting, and gold leaf, it’s time for the architectural details to bring the vision to life.

This is where I get really excited because this is when the walls go from flat and simple to layered and dimensional. I’ve always loved the transformative power of trim. It adds the architectural element that instantly makes a space feel finished, intentional, and timeless. For this powder bath, I designed a classic picture molding layout to complement the proportions of the room and draw the eye upward toward that shimmering gold-leaf ceiling.

Picture Molding Trim, the Perfect Detail

This was such a fun part of the process, and, surprisingly, one I really enjoyed. There’s something meditative about measuring, cutting, and nailing each piece in place, watching the lines take shape just as I imagined in CAD weeks ago.

But let’s be honest… no DIY journey is complete without a hiccup or two.

At one point, I was so in the groove that I completely forgot about the pocket door hidden behind one wall. I’d carefully planned for it, but in the rhythm of installing, I didn’t switch from my 2-inch brad nails down to the 1.25-inch ones like I was supposed to. Let’s just say the pocket door and I had a bit of a disagreement, and for a brief moment, it was nailed shut.

Thankfully, it was an easy fix (and a humbling reminder). A skilled carpenter or finish installer would have caught that instinctively, which just goes to show: even when you know what you’re doing, the pros bring an invaluable level of focus, precision, and muscle memory to the job.

Luckily, the nails that hit the door were nothing a little wood filler and paint touch up couldn't fix. 😅

A Lesson in Craftsmanship

As I stood back and looked at the finished trim, it hit me again, this is what I love most about design. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new.

I already knew how transformative picture molding could be, instantly elevating the room, but this week reminded me that every day offers an opportunity to learn and grow. That’s something we deeply believe at Slate Studios, every project makes us better designers, sharper problem-solvers, and more attuned to the details that bring real value to our clients.

And even with a few hiccups, this process reinforced why I have such deep respect for our trades. Their expertise, efficiency, and attention to detail make this kind of work look effortless, but I'm here to tell you, it’s anything but.
